David James (Jim) Fleck

     It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of David James Fleck at the Seven Regions Health Centre, Gladstone on Wednesday, November 21, 2007. 

     Jim was the only son of William & Mary Fleck and was born in the family home in Gladstone on May 4, 1924. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Marie Chandler (Bill) and Jean Cross (Don). He is survived by his sister Margaret Maki (Laurie), nieces and nephews as well as relatives in England and Northern Ireland. 

     Jim received his education in Gladstone, then attended Normal School in Winnipeg and went directly into the Air Force for 3 years. His first teaching job was in Starbuck then in the Winnipeg School Division – Isaac Brock and Daniel McIntyre, then became principal at Lansdowne and Wellington School. He loved his profession, which lasted 40 years and he was a believer in discipline. 

     He retired to Gladstone, where he was active in the Museum and Agricultural Society. He chaired the “Gladstone Then & Now” Book Committee, which took a good part of 2 years. He also enjoyed travelling and gardening and was generous to his friends with his abundance of produce and canning. He also made beautiful quilts. 

     Cremation has taken place and a graveside service was held on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. in the Gladstone Cemetery with Rev. Ian Olive officiating. All were invited to the Gladstone United Church Annex where Jim’s family met with friends for a time of fellowship and refreshments following the committal. 

     If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Legion Auxiliary, Gladstone, Manitoba R0J 0T0 or to a charity of one’s choice.
