It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear husband, uncle and friend on Thursday November 14, 2019 at home at the age of 78 years.
Predeceased by his father Gustaaf Paelinck in 1946 and mother Sylvia Gilroy in 2007; step father Vern Gilroy; sisters Marcia and Bonnie. He leaves to mourn him his beloved wife Susan (nee McKelvy); brother Rodrick Gilroy; along with numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and countless friends.
Michael was born in England on August 27, 1941 and immigrated to Canada in 1946 at the age of 5. His childhood was spent living in Northern Ontario and Manitoba. He graduated High School in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Early in adulthood he found his passion for food. He moved to Vancouver to work as an Executive chef in Golf and Country clubs. Working as an Executive chef lead him to further his culinary education by completing courses and experiences that took him travelling around the globe. In his 30’s he was the youngest executive chef in Canada. Employment opportunities allowed him a means of helping others develop their love for cooking in some of the instructural roles he held. When he moved back to Winnipeg he worked in the kitchens of the correctional institutions of the Remand Centre, Headingly and Milner Ridge. After he retired in 2002 he worked for Freud of Canada selling woodworking tools then he sold wine kits for Brewers’ Direct.
He met and married Susan McKelvy August 27, 2005
After retiring from his culinary career, he could be found in his shop working on woodworking projects, down in this basement perfecting his wine or visiting with neighbors down the lane. He especially enjoyed spending time visiting with his many friends at Miller’s Campground where Susan and he spent many summers.
