Claude Unrau Obituary

Claude Frank Unrau, 86, formerly of MacGregor, Manitoba, beloved father of Melanie and Sharlene, passed away peacefully with family at his side on Saturday, October 4, 2025 at Third Crossing Manor in Gladstone, Manitoba.

Claude was born on January 1, 1939, in Rush Lake, Saskatchewan. He was the youngest of seven children born to Isaac and Justina Unrau (nee Knelson). His early childhood years took him from Rush Lake to Plum Coulee, Manitoba, and then to a small farm southwest of MacGregor, Manitoba, where the family eventually built a home when Claude was about 10 years old. It was there that his lifelong love of the land took root.

Claude received his education at nearby Emmeline school and shared fond memories of his time spent with childhood friends and classmates. He would later take “upgrading” to boost and enhance his education.

In 1976, Claude married Ruby (nee Doerksen), and took over the family farm when his parents moved into Austin the following year. Together, Claude and Ruby welcomed two daughters, Melanie Christine in 1977, and Sharlene Renée in 1980. After life changed course, Claude confidently embraced single parenting with patience, humour and creativity (especially in the cooking department!). Raising two daughters on his own took courage and some much appreciated help from his little “village” of caring family and neighbours who would provide childcare for Melanie and Sharlene while Claude worked shifts.

Claude was kind of a jack of all trades, working jobs from gas jockeying at the junction of highways 1 and 16, to anything farm related, to carpentry and construction, and finally settling into a 13 year gig at Carnation Foods in Carberry, Manitoba until he retired in 1999. He also tuned the odd piano if someone requested. He loved music, and in his later years, often played his autoharp for church and care home services. Known for his lighthearted nature, quick wit and kind heart, Claude brought laughter and warmth wherever he went. He made countless friendships over his lifetime and was a founding member of the “coffee shop culture” at JJ’s restaurant.

As much as Claude loved being a Dad, he enjoyed being a grandfather even more. He was a kid at heart and was always excited to spend time with the grandkids. He developed deep and meaningful friendships with each of his grandchildren, often babysitting them, taking them bowling in Southport and Brandon, or inviting them to spend time with him at the farm, or going for coffee, or indulging in leisurely drives in the country. Family meant everything to Claude, and he meant the world to his family.
Left to cherish Claude’s memory are his daughters and grandchildren: Melanie (Dwayne) Fredrickson (Shane, Brendan, Avery, Addison) of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba; and Sharlene (Luke) Neufeld (Isaiah, Joshua, Anna-Renée) of Austin, Manitoba. He is also survived by his sister, Almeda (John) Rodgers, and sister-in-law, Helen Unrau, both of MacGregor, Manitoba, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Claude was predeceased by his parents Isaac and Justina, brothers Ernest, Leonard, Wesley and Clive, sister Dorothy, brother-in-law Henry Walde and sister-in-law Margaret Unrau.

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at Third Crossing Manor for the amazing care they gave him for the past six years; as well as to
Clarke’s Funeral Home in Gladstone for their kindness and compassion. The family also wishes to sincerely thank those who offered condolences, comfort and support.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 10, 2025 at 2:00 pm at Austin Hall in Austin, Manitoba, with John and Charity Schellenberg officiating. All of Claude’s grandchildren are considered honourary pallbearers.

In memory of Claude, a charitable donation may be made to Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
