Garnet Smith Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Garnet Smith, who was born on May 8, 1951, and died peacefully on May 15 th , 2026 at the age of 75.

Garnet was the second child of Stan and Phyllis Smith. He attended a one-room school in Firdale before going on to high school in Carberry.

Garnet married Elsie in Austin in 1972, and together they built a life in Firdale, where they spent all 53 years of their marriage.

Garnet had many loves in life: Elsie, coffee, animals, nieces and nephews — not always necessarily in that order. He was very athletic and enjoyed competing in curling, hockey, baseball, and golf. He worked in Crop Insurance for many years but farming with his family was always his true passion.

He was well known for his generosity and kind nature, often caught slipping kids money for treats. Garnet was meticulous and detail- oriented, evidenced by his perfect yard, woodworking projects, regularly scheduled haircuts and his determination to make it to Memory Lane on time, regardless of the season or farming activity.

Garnet and Elsie enjoyed entertaining, travelling, watching hockey, and spending summers at the campground in Killarney with their lifelong friends Ferg, Donelda, and family.

Garnet always seemed to know someone wherever he went. Regardless of how busy he was, he would always take the time to stop and have a visit. A person could never count on going anywhere quickly with Garnet.

He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Garnet was predeceased by his parents, Stan and Phyllis; his brother Greg; brothers-in-law Glen and Gary; and nephews Dean and Garett.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife Elsie; brother Gerald and family Gayle, Brynne, Jordan, Madalyn, and Kylen; sister Valerie and family Tara and Mike, Alex, Shaune, Skye, Emmitt, and Archer; sister-in-law Vicky and family Curran, Jacy, Howie, Derek, Jayden, Hanna, Jeter, and Zak; sister-in-law Judy and family Kevin and Lorelei, Brennan and Becky, Duane and Suzanne, Boston, Blade, Luke, Brody, Max, and Abby; sister-in-law Bev and family Kim, Darryl and Diana, Madison, McKenna, Raelyn, Dawson, and Colby; and brother-in-law Bill and family Assunta, Kristan and Keith, Tricia, Jenna Rose, Brad, Ella, and Hunter.
