Hazel Zdan Obituary

It saddens us greatly that Hazel passed away peacefully at the Neepawa Hospital on Friday, February 9, 2018.

Hazel was born in Terrence, Manitoba, on January 28, 1928, the youngest of 6. She later moved to Glenella after marrying Stan Zdan in Winnipeg.

Hazel spent a lot of her younger years helping out with friends and family, wherever she was needed. She loved gardening and canning everything she could.

When there were 2 separate boards for the church, Hazel was a member of the session, then when the 2 boards combined, she was a board member and remained so for the rest of her life. She was an active member till recent years when declining health dictated she slow down. She was a member of the UCW, and was also a member of Glenvilla Seniors, where she spent a lot of time playing cards and celebrating birthdays. Hazel worked bingo for years as well.

Hazel always helped out with the fall supper and pancake suppers and anything in between! In later years she helped at the dessert table, until with failing health, she stepped back from it all.

Hazel was also a faithful helper for the funeral lunches and in earlier years, she would donate homemade pickles and her dilled carrots were “out of this world delicious.” It was only the last couple of years that she no longer was able to help at these events. She usually oversaw the setting up the tables and made sure there was the proper amount of chairs per table.

She “loved to shovel snow” and would be the first there on Sunday mornings to shovel the church walkway. It didn’t matter whose turn it was, she beat them to it! You had to get up long before breakfast to be there before her. She was a kind lady, spoke well of everyone and was witty too. When asked how she was, the answer would be “I’m still on the right side of the grass!” There was always a card in my mailbox for my birthday.

She was a regular at church, rarely did she miss a Sunday and on one occasion had forgotten her hearing aid at home, and she remarked “it would have been a good service if I’d been able to hear it.”

Hazel was very independent, refusing a ride anytime as “she needed the exercise”. She was a faithful church goer right up to only a week before she was hospitalized.

The light in her life was her grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews; granddaughter Jill & Blair along with their children, Tyler and Alana; grandson Danny & Melissa and their children Evan and Ella; granddaughter Lori.

Hazel was predeceased by her husband Staley and son in law Jan; parents Robert & Hannah Boxall; siblings Myrtle, Robert, Lorne, Eva and Leslie.

Sharon would like to give a huge thank you to Ernie & Debbi Onischuk and her friend Val for everything they have done to help her through this difficult time.

The family would also like to thank the community for looking out for Hazel in her last months.
