Peacefully on November 28, 2024, Jimmy Howard Stanley passed away at the Portage District General Hospital with family by his side at the age of 77 after a brief battle with cancer.
Jim was born May 30, 1947 and grew up in the Amaranth area. When he was 17, he started working for the PFRA. He did that for several years at different pastures but then he returned home and started trucking with his father Howard and ran the Langruth Plumas Freighters. After that, Jim went back to school to become an electrician and ran his own business until retirement. Jim married Donna in September 1974 and they started farming. Jim loved his cows and they were like pets to him. He loved nothing more than just standing there looking at them after chores were done. Jim also spent many years commercial fishing in the winter. He was always a hard worker and wasn’t one to sit still.
Jim had a green thumb like his father Howard and had the most amazing garden. He spent countless hours out there looking after it and was always very proud of it. He grew enough to feed an army and was very generous in sharing it with family, friends and the community. Jim also loved spending time out in his boat fishing. He was lucky enough to reel in a master angler pickerel earlier this spring. Hopefully wherever he is he can continue to garden and fish like he would have loved to have done here.
Jim was predeceased by his wife Donna in December 2023, parents Howard and Marjorie, brother Carl, sister Bev, grandson Brendan and nephew Ryan.
Jim leaves to mourn in his passing his daughter Allison (Dallas), grandchildren Dawson and Alexa; son Darrin (Heather), grandchildren Carson and Rhayne; brother Gary; brother Ron (Karlene); sister-in-law Linda; sister-in-law Maureen (Jim) as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Cremation has taken place and funeral service will be planned at a late date.
The family would like to thank the staff at Portage Hospital for their excellent care and compassion over the past few weeks while he was there.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba or to the Portage District General Hospital Foundation – Palliative Care Fund.
