It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Joan Lena Starr-Malcolm on June 8, 2025 at the age of 72. Joan was born in the city of Winnipeg on June 17, 1952. She grew up in the community of Sandy Bay First Nation where she attended residential school for 9 years. She also attended Amaranth Collegiate where she graduated from and spent over 40 years working in finance in the community of Sandy Bay. She worked at ASETS and retired at the age of 69. Joan will be immensely missed and her absence will be drastically felt by all those who worked with her, who loved, and cared for her. Joan is predeceased by her mother Doris Starr, Father Howard Starr, Brother Freddie Starr, Nieces Renata & Mandy Beaulieu, nephews Clayton Starr and Joseph Spence. She is survived by her four children; Dwight Bamlett, Shawna Bamlett (Rodney) Shane Malcolm (Mallory), Dean Malcolm (Sasheen). Grandchildren; JJ, Nick (Tyra), Julia, Brooke, Sage, Zack, Rodney Jr, Scarlet, Edith, Soraya, Shane Jr, Star Great grandchildren; Emilia, Nico, Nova, Zaleigha & Nakota. She also leaves behind her beloved sisters Audrey, Lulu (Jeff), Delores (Jim), Lisa, Gloria (Lyle) and brothers Mervin (Sylvia), Stan (Dodi), Cecil, Chuch (Carla) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Growing up Joan enjoyed spending her time with her parents and siblings, especially her sisters. She was charismatic, caring, charming and had the most amazing sense of humour. Whenever a friend or a family member had a problem or just needed a shoulder to cry on, Joan was the person they would go to. She always had the best advice or just made you feel so much better after talking with her. She always walked in her true authenticity and lit up every room she ever stepped in. She loved to laugh, dress extra fashionable, watch crime docu series, travel and spend money. In her free time, you could find her somewhere being mischievous (usually gambling) with her best friend and partner in crime Audrey. Joan and Audrey were always together and if they weren’t together they were always on the phone. Joan was Audreys best friend, and Audrey hers. She also really enjoyed spending her free time with her grandchildren and she was proud of them knowing they were following in her footsteps. During her time within the community Joan worked within numerous positions and volunteered her time to community events. She was hard working, highly intelligent and especially giving. Joan really enjoyed spending her days at work alongside her cousin Tukshi. Joan and Tukshi worked together at the ASETS office for well over 10 years and will be greatly missed.
