Luc Gamache Obituary

Luc passed away after a short, brave battle with lung cancer on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at the Health Science Centre, Wpg. at the age of 77 years.

Luc was born in Ste. Rose du Lac, MB on March 22, 1942. He grew up on a farm just outside of Laurier, MB. He attended school at École Pennarun, Janiorat (St. Boniface) and Laurier schools. He later completed a Bachelor of Arts with an Education Certificate from the University of Manitoba. He worked for 30 years as a teacher, beginning at East Tupper—a one room country school—and later spending time at Kelwood High School, Gladstone Schools, MacGregor Collegiate, École Prince Charles, and Portage Collegiate. He coached high school volleyball, hockey, and fastball (including one rural provincial championship). He also spent many years coaching his sons in minor hockey and minor baseball.

Luc was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, hiking, and fishing—having caught master angler fish in over a dozen species. He also enjoyed golfing, gardening and birdwatching. He was a skilled photographer, woodworker and carver, having won many awards for his carvings. Over the years he was a member of Bittersweet Ski Club, MacGregor Wood Carvers, Friends of the Blue Birds, and MacGregor Lions Club. He was also an avid Montreal Canadiens fan and had attended several games in the past years. He traveled from coast-to-coast across Canada and to many states in the US (including Alaska) as well as two trips to France as a school chaperone.

His fondest memories were of his wedding, being present at the birth of his sons, family trips each summer, camping (especially at Lake Audy), spring-break ice fishing trips, his backyard hockey rinks with his family, playing with his grandchildren and the accomplishments of his children.

His greatest inspirations in life were his wife and sons and their families, his parents, brothers and sisters, and his Uncle Émile—a veteran of the 2nd World War.

Luc was predeceased by his Mom Jeanne (Dupré) and Dad Philippe Gamache (of Laurier, MB); brothers Gérald, Gérard and Fernand Gamache; and sister Marie Gamache. He is survived by his siblings Denise (and Noel) Saquet of Laurier, MB, Cyril (and Cecile) Gamache of St. Rose du Lac, MB, Sylvia (and Jules) Saquet of Laurier, MB, Angeline (and Lucien) Houde of Winnpeg, MB, Bibianne (and Ron) Plessis of Lumby, BC, Adrien (and Judy) Gamache of McCreary, MB, Jean Gamache of Laurier, MB and Mary Gamache (Sister-in-law) of Cranbrook, BC; his wife Donna Gamache; children Daniel (and Darla) Gamache of Athens, GA, Ian Gamache of Montréal, PQ and Robert (and Sarah) Gamache of Nain, NL; grandchildren Sacha-Louis Poirier-Gamache, Noah Gamache, Nathanael Gamache, Adelyn Gamache, and Charlotte Gamache as well as many nieces and nephews.

Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, September 16, 2019 at 11:00 am at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Portage la Prairie.
