Margaret Goertzen Obituary

After a short illness Margaret passed away peacefully at the Portage General Hospital on May 13 at the age of 78.

Margaret was born in Winkler, MB to Gerhard and Maria (nee Boehlig) Goertzen on April 3, 1941.  She was the 2nd youngest of 7 children.

Margaret was predeceased by both her parents Gerhard & Maria; eldest brother George Goertzen, his first wife Anne (nee Bartel), George’s second wife Gail (nee Hadland-Eastcott); sister Anna and husband Mervin Kasprick; sister Helen and brother-in-law Verne Atkinson; sister-in-law Jean Goertzen and nephew Scott Goertzen.

She leaves to morn her sister Mary and husband Rex Kitching of Courtney, BC; brother John Goertzen and friend Betty of Gladstone; younger brother Henry Goertzen and Kay of Brandon, plus 20 nieces and nephews, their families, extended families, her good friends Virginia Ewashko, Margaret Collier, and her care givers at TCM which were a big part of her life.

In 1952 Margaret and her family moved to Gladstone. As an adult she lived at Riverside residence in Gladstone and worked at Sprucedale Industries in Austin.  She later moved to a group home in Portage la Prairie and worked at Arc Industries for over 20 years.

In 2004 Margaret moved back to Gladstone and became a resident at Third Crossing Manor, where she resided for the last 15 yrs.  It was noted that Margaret’s time as a resident at TCM was the longest residence recorded.

Margaret was affected by Cerebral Palsy and always showed tremendous strength and courage.  In the later years as ability to speak deteriorated she always found a way to communicate. She had an amazing sense of humor and enjoyed socializing and “dressing up for occasions”!

Margaret touched the hearts of all that knew her and she will be missed by not only her family but her many friends and caregivers at TCM.

We would like to thank the staff at TCM, and the Portage hospital for the excellent care they gave Margaret.
