Mary Kakewash Obituary

Our precious mouther of the whole family as passed on.  At 78 years old she began her journey into the spirit world, with her loved ones by her side.

Bernice grew up in Sandy Bay, Manitoba.  She was the oldest out of 17 children.  She was married to Colin Kakewash for many beautiful years before he passed on.  They had 4 children and raised their niece as their own as well as other children.  She will now get to reunite with her husband and first-born son Yogi and her baby girl Joanne.

Bernice was the most kind, humble and generous person to everyone she knew.  She was generous with her love, her hospitality, even financially with the little that she had.  Most of all se was generous with her time.  She loved to spend all the time she could with friends and family.

She enjoyed travelling and was always on the road with her daughter and her sisters.  Her best friends were Kathy, Irene, Margaret, and Lawrence.  They would take her out for lunch, road trips, thrift shopping, pay bills and help her do many things around her house.  Her most favorite thing to do was to cook.  She would cater weddings, birthdays, or funerals for anyone who asked her.  She was named the Bannock lady in Portage as she always gave away Bannock to anyone who was interested in receiving some.  When she lived in Pine Creek she sold homemade baked goods from her home.  She also served a free hot lunch to students in Pine Creek.  She was very giving, always thinking of everyone.  Her favorite TV show was the Price is Right.  She loved talking on the phone to her friends and family and sitting around a fire.  She put lots of time and effort into making candy bags for her grandchildren every Christmas.  She was so strong and courageous and could adapt to any challenging situation.  During the pandemic she learned to order her groceries over the phone and have them delivered to her door.  She was resilient and independent.  In spite of all the constant loss and grieving she was dealt, she was always smiling, always strong and always spoke her mind.   She truly was the strongest woman of our family.

We will miss the comforting visits and moments where she gave us advice and shared her wisdom with us.  Her advice and presence was taken in with great respect and love.

She began not to do the things she loved to do and longed for so many of her loved ones.  Although our lives are changed forever, we are thankful she is free from pain.  We are grateful for everything she has done for us and all the time that we got to have with her.

We are beyond thankful for her infinite love and the lifetime of memories she has left us all with.

Bernice will be tremendously missed by her family. She leaves behind the heavy hearts of her daughter Rolanda (Norm), her son Ronnie Kakewash and her baby boy, and her pride and joy Baron (Gilly) Kakewash; her 21 grandchildren, many great grandbabies; also her previous in-laws, Dennis, Cheryl, Joanne and Brenda and many more loved ones.
