Mary Thomson, née Dayholos passed away peacefully on June 22, 2024. Born on January 1, 1928, in Glenella, Manitoba, she was the cherished daughter of Annie and Nick Dayholos . Mary spent her formative years on the family farm alongside her beloved siblings: Fred, Harry, John, and Millie, all of whom she has now reunited with in eternity.
Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband, Moffat Earl Thomson ("Red"), who died on February 17, 1994. They were married on October 16, 1953. She is survived by her four devoted children: William (Kathy), Darlene (Gary), Robert (Cheryl), and Larry (Dana). She was a proud grandmother to eight grandchildren: Gary (Erin), Bobby (Angela), Brian (Kayla), Laura (Stephen), Kimberly (Dave), Rebecca (Cody), Myleigh, and Morgan, and adored great-grandmother to Camden, Darien, Ethan, Emily, and Wrenley.
As a young woman, Mary was known for her athleticism and feistiness playing broomball and baseball with enthusiasm. Her career at Eaton's in the fabric department showcased her eye for detail and passion for sewing, skills she later turned into a thriving home business. Alongside Red, she nurtured their family across Canadian Armed Forces bases in Winnipeg, Germany, and New Brunswick, creating a warm and loving home for their children.
Mary's creativity knew no bounds. She was a talented seamstress, renowned for her quilts and wedding dresses. Her knitting needles crafted countless pairs of cherished slippers, a testament to her skill and generosity. A passionate gardener, Mary cultivated beautiful flowers and filled her kitchen with the bounty of her canning and pickling skills.
Sundays were a special tradition in Mary's household, where family dinners overflowed with food, family, cards and love. Her homemade specialties, including perogies, bread pudding, and cabbage rolls, delighted all who gathered around her table. Mary also enjoyed the thrill of a good card game, whether in Las Vegas, at bingo with friends, or at home with family. Her love for the Toronto Blue Jays and a spirited game of cribbage or slots added joy to her leisure time.
Mary Thomson will be fondly remembered for her kind heart, boundless creativity, and unwavering devotion to her family. Her legacy of love and laughter will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
A small private service for family will be held at Plumas to celebrate Mary's remarkable life.
The family would like to extend gratitude to Pat Helene-Wilsone, Mary’s friend and physiotherapist, who extended such compassion for Mary in her final years and frequently visited Mary when she was not working.
