Mildred Armstrong Obituary

MILDRED REGINE ARMSTRONG

(née EWERT)

May 24, 1928 - November 7, 2021

It is with deep sadness that the family of Mildred Regine Armstrong announces her passing on November 7, 2021 at the Portage General Hospital due to complications of pneumonia, at the age of 93 years.

Mildred was born in Carnduff, Saskatchewan on May 24, 1928, the eldest of five children. From a young age, her strong work ethic and caring nature developed as she helped raise her siblings in the absence of her mother. At the completion of high school, she went on to work at the Bank of Montreal in Carnduff, choosing to remain in Canada while her father and siblings moved to Reno, NV. In 1950, Mildred married John Lobel. They farmed at Virden for two years and then moved to Winnipeg where they farmed land at Stony Mountain and Rosser. In 1954, they moved to Amaranth and farmed until John’s passing in 1993. They had four children together. In 1994, Mildred married Wally Armstrong of Langruth, where Wally farmed and they later retired. After Wally’s passing in 2020, Mildred moved to the Third Crossing Manor in Gladstone.

While in Amaranth, Mildred resumed her passion for banking, working for the Amaranth Credit Union for fifteen years until she retired in 1989. She continued as a board member for another ten years.  Mildred also served as magistrate for the Amaranth and Langruth district for over twenty three years and chair person for the Youth Justice Court. She was actively involved in the community and devoted her time to many organizations: the United Church, the Women’s Institute, 4-H sewing group leader, secretary-treasurer for the UVD of Amaranth and the Amaranth Gazette.

Mildred’s hobbies included cooking, reading, solving puzzles, gardening, sewing, and crocheting. After retirement, she enjoyed wintering in Nevada, Arizona and B.C. to spend time with friends and relatives. Mildred was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a wonderful friend to all who knew her and will be fondly remembered.

Mildred is survived by her children, Wayne Lobel, Janice (Daryl) Gross, Glenn Lobel and daughter-in-law Collette Lobel; grandchildren Curtis, Raymond, Pamela, Justin, Weylin, Jesse, Allison, Kevin, Brian, Tyson, Leslie and John; stepchildren, Lyle (Lana) Armstrong, Wayne (Sandy) Armstrong, Brent (Sharon) Armstrong, and Kelly (Sarah) Armstrong; step grandchildren, Michael, Lisa, Alana, Christopher, Lauren, Melissa, Monica, Josh, Lucas, Jacob, Jessica, Rachel and Dillon; brother Leonard (Sandy) Ewert; as well as many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mildred was preceded in death by her first husband John Lobel; son Barry Lobel; her late husband “Wally” Robert Wallace Armstrong; parents Herman and Martha (Goertz) Ewert; sisters Eileen (Robert) Carpenter and Lillian (Allan) Gray and brother Lewis (Beverly) Ewert.

A private family service will be held with Wendy Denbow officiating.

Interment will take place Saturday, November 13, 2021 at 2:45 p.m. at Lakeland Cemetery for those who would like to attend.
