Norma Hanna Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of their wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and sister, Norma Jean Hanna, at the age of 77 at her home in Austin, Manitoba.

Norma was born on February 2, 1941 in MacGregor, Manitoba to Robert and Mary (Pilkington) Stratton. She attended both elementary and high school in MacGregor, graduating from grade 11 in 1958. She married Barry Calvert from Sidney on November 4, 1961. They had 3 children together; Grant, Cheryl and Darren. Barry was diagnosed with leukemia and he passed away in 1970. A while later, Norma met James Hanna, and they were married October 28, 1972. Jim’s son, Jimmy, also joined the family at this time. Jim, Norma and kids welcomed Teresa into the family in 1974, and their “Yours, Mine, and Ours” family was complete.

Norma lived on a farm in Firdale, Manitoba with Barry until his passing. She then moved to MacGregor with the three children, working at both the Bank of Montreal and the R.M. of North-Norfolk. Once Norma and Jim married, they moved into their new house on the farm at Pine Creek with all of the children. While raising their family, Norma spent hours making pickles, relish, jams, and all the baking you could imagine. Throughout the years, she was always interested in what her children and grandchildren were doing, and thoroughly enjoyed family get-togethers. A highlight for Jim and Norma has been watching the grandchildren in their many different activities, such as sporting events, 4-H shows and school concerts, just to name a few. Norma also had quite a knack for ceramics and cake decorating. In 1983, she had cataract surgery which resulted in the loss of sight in one eye. She overcame this disability, continuing to do all she did without many people noticing her struggle. She developed rheumatoid arthritis later in her life, and Jim became her loving and devoted caregiver for the last few years.

Norma is predeceased by her first husband, Barry Calvert; her parents, Robert and Mary Stratton; mother-in-law, Lottie Hanna; parents-in-law, Reginald and Dorothy Calvert; brother, Bobby Stratton; sisters-in-law, Letitia McDougall and Bonnie Lunn; and brothers-in-law, Barry Barber and Ronnie Calvert. She leaves to mourn her loving husband, Jim Hanna, of almost 46 years; son, Grant (Joann) Calvert; grandchildren, Trevor (Alyssa), Kylee (Eric), and Braden; daughter, Cheryl (Alan) Manns; grandchildren, Darcy (Andrea), Devon (Carmen), and Brett; son, Jim (Adena) Hanna; grandchildren, Miranda, Robert (Sarah), Kenny (Destiny), Jamie, and Connor; great-grandson, Liam; son, Darren Calvert; daughter, Teresa (Brian) Moore; grandchildren, Graham and Reanna; sister, Donna Barber; brothers-in-law, John (Lorraine) McDougall, Jim Lunn, Dennis (Kay) Hanna; sister-in-law, Phyllis Calvert; aunt Dorothy Stratton; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She will also be missed by the women in her “Birthday Club” and close family friends, Danny and Louise Rintoul, Bob and Lydia Deveson, and Dave and Faye Erickson.
