Peter Fehr Obituary

On Christmas Day our cherished husband, dad, grandpa, and great grandpa received the ultimate gift of all – his heavenly home.

Peter Fehr of Gladstone, Manitoba, went to be with the Lord on December 25, 2020 at the age of 87.

Peter was born in Haskett, Manitoba on November 7, 1933 to Diedrich and Margaret Fehr, the second of 13 children. Peter was a family man who helped to support the large family that he grew up in. His quiet care and concern for his siblings, and later his own children and grand children made him a rock and pillar to us all.

In his youth, Peter was known for his athletic ability and strength, and had the fastest pitching arm around.  Peter met the love of his life, Helen Friesen, on a blind date in 1952. They were married in 1957 and had 4 children. Peter and Helen spent the early years of their marriage living in Winnipeg, with Peter working for CP Communications.

Farming was in his blood. He started with very little – his first land purchase was 7 acres near Haskett, then 40 acres near Osterwick. A few years after Peter and Helen were married, Peter and his good friend Jake Gerbrandt bought land together at Elm Creek, which they enjoyed farming on evenings and weekends. On March 13, 1965, the day his eldest daughter was born, Peter took the plunge and purchased a farm near Plumas, Manitoba. A town Helen had never even heard of.

Peter and Helen farmed at Plumas for 46 years before retiring at Gladstone in 2011. Peter was well known in the Plumas, Gladstone and the surrounding community coffee shops. One of his biggest pleasures was sitting down with friends over a cup of coffee. Peter loved to golf and work with his hands. Many of us have his woodworking treasures in our homes.

Peter’s life was characterized by a deep commitment to his faith in God which he publicly declared when he was baptized in the Sommerfelder Church in Winkler in 1956. Throughout his life he was involved in the church community, at the Winkler Bergthaler Church, then at the Gladstone Christian Fellowship.  He loved music and was always singing along in his deep bass voice to his favorite gospel songs.

Peter was a kind, caring, and patient husband, father and grandfather.  He was a pleasure to spend time with, and formed many close bonds with his family.  We will miss his wit, his twinkling blue eyes and mischievous smile.  He leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Helen (Friesen) Fehr, his children Randy (Debbie), Ron (Elaine), Melinda (Jeff) Harder, Melanie (Chris) Doell, 13 grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 6 step great grandchildren.   He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law Kathy (Friesen) Fehr, by his parents Diedrich and Margaret Fehr, by his brothers John, Dick and Gilbert, his sister Ann Smart, his parents-in-law Abram and Elizabeth Friesen, sisters-in-law Kay Enns, Betty Unger, Kristine Friesen, Helen Fehr, Leona Friesen, and brothers-in-law Ed Friesen, John Enns, Jake Enns and Barry Smart.
