Peter Wiebe

Peter went to be with his Lord and Saviour on July 19th 2023 at MacGregor Health Centre at the age of 87 after a brief respiratory illness.
Peter was born in Winkler Manitoba on October 5th 1935 to Martin and Anna Wiebe. Dad spent his younger years working at various jobs including George Elias, the municipality hauling gravel and for the transfer business.
Dad only had a grade 6 education and he used to say he had half of grade 12. Despite having little education, Dad did very well for himself.
Dad married the love of his life Anna Elias on May 5th 1963. They were blessed with 60 years of marriage. Mom and Dad worked together for many years whether on the farm or doing dishes. Mom and Dad moved to Gladstone district in 1966 where Dad worked for Schellenberg’s PMU farm and later owned their own farm. Here Mom and Dad were blessed with two daughters, Jennifer and Judith. His daughters meant the world to him and although showing emotion was never his strong point, we never doubted the love he had for us. He was the best dad you could ask for and we could always persuade him to buy us a treat – usually chips.
We girls helped dad outside with cleaning calf pens, cultivating, baling and hauling manure. We had a hard time having the manure spreader at just the right angle but we always managed to get the job done. An afternoon of work outside was always followed by a cold Pepsi. Dad was very particular about how things were done and if someone used his equipment it better be returned in the condition that it left.
Mom and Dad were blessed with four grandchildren whom Dad adored. Dad had a deep concern for his grandchildren and always wanted to make sure they were doing well. Visited from his grandchildren were treasured moments and they could never leave without having faspa with Grandpa!
Mom and Dad hung up their hats with farming in 2014 and it was shortly thereafter that his health and memory began to decline. He often said he should have stayed on the farm to keep his strength up.
As Dad’s health continued to decline, Mom could no longer keep up with his care. A family decision was made to move him to the MacGregor Health Centre – it was heartbreaking but necessary for Mom’s health and wellbeing. Dad spent his days there looking for a way out – and he succeed twice! A farmer will always know how to open a gate.
He still enjoyed his food and tried many dishes that he never would have before. He also loved music. Music has always been very important to him. He loved old bluegrass and gospel and was very quick to let you know if he didn’t care for something.
Dad’s mind was always on work, even in the care home. He would often ask Mom about cattle chores and she would assure him that Brian was taking care of it.
Dad was always willing to help a neighbor. He got along with all those who knew him and he didn’t usually sugarcoat his feelings.
Dad’s faith never wavered and he sometimes mentioned that he wished he could leave this earth. Dad received his reward on the late hours of July 19th. He fought hard and finished his race and while we will miss him terribly, we are happy to know that Dad is in Heaven with a new body and mind.
He was predeceased by his parents Martin and Anna Wiebe, 4 sisters, 4 brothers, numerous brothers and sisters in law as well as multiple nieces and nephews.
He leaves to mourn his wife Anne, daughter Jennifer (Richard), daughter Judith (Brian) and grandchildren Wesley, Michael, Adrienne and Ryan; one sister Susan Elias as well as numerous extended family members.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff at the Macgregor Health Centre for their wonderful compassionate care for Dad – they truly went above and beyond for his comfort. Also, we say thank you to all those who have held the family up in prayer on this difficult journey. Your prayers made this trying time a little bit easier.
