It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, Sophie Fredbjornson, who entered into rest on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at the age of 82 years.
Sophie was born on February 27, 1943, at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Winnipeg to Michael and Katie Hordesky, joining her big brother John as the family’s youngest. She grew up in Amaranth, where she created many cherished memories with her dear childhood friend, Gail Cooper. As a teenager, Sophie moved to Winnipeg to attend the Marvel School of Beauty, where she trained as a hairdresser.
Throughout the years, her kitchen table became a familiar salon for friends and family who received her haircuts and perms, always accompanied by her warm conversation and laughter. At just 18 years old, Sophie married the love of her life, Terry, of the Leifer district. Together, they made their home at the PFRA pasture north of Gladstone, where they raised their family and built a life full of hard work, community, and love.
Sophie was deeply social and loved nothing more than visiting and listening to the stories of those around her. She delighted in organizing family fun days at the pasture, where sack races, egg-and-spoon races, and plenty of laughter brought joy to all who attended. Sophie shared her kindness and hospitality not only with her family but with her wider community. She spent many years working at the Paris Café, where customers became friends, and at Riverside, where the residents became like family. Later, in retirement, she found great joy in transforming her property south of Gladstone into a gardener’s paradise, complete with walking paths, fairy villages, birdhouses, and countless blooms. She loved sitting by the window with her binoculars and bird book, identifying and admiring the birds that visited her yard. In her later years, Sophie settled in Gladstone, where she became known as a welcoming and familiar face to many. She enjoyed the camaraderie of the Legion, delighted in baking pies to sell, and found joy in connecting with Gladstone’s newest residents, always eager to hear their stories.
Her final years were spent at Centennial Apartments, where she tended to her plants and enjoyed the companionship of fellow residents.
Sophie was predeceased by her loving husband Terry and her granddaughter Jacey Lee. She will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by her children Zane (Michelle), Jacqui (Jeff), Conrad (Sabrina), and Jana (James); her grandchildren Bruxell, Carleigh, Leighton, McKenzie, Aaron, and Samantha; her great-granddaughter Leah; and her brother John.
A memorial service to celebrate Sophie’s life will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the United Church in Gladstone. In memory of Sophie, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
Sophie’s warmth, laughter, and love of people will live on in the stories she shared, the family she cherished, and the community she so deeply touched.
