It’s with great sorrow and sadness that Stella Batyski passed away March 9, 2025, at Country Meadows at the age of 91. Stella was born May 2, 1933, to Philip and Verna (nee Kunka) Slipetz at Pine River, the fourth of five children behind Ann, John, and Jean. Stella attended Vimy Ridge school walking three and half miles one way.
Stella left home at a young age to find work. She worked many places and enjoyed waitressing in Winnipeg.
Stella met Fred Batyski and married on December 29, 1954, in Winnipeg. They lived in Winnipeg for a time before moving to the farm in Glenhope where they farmed together and raised their family. They had three sons: William, Michael and John. They raised chickens, turkeys, geese, cattle, along with planting a big garden. Stella canned lots and was a very good cook. She made perogies, cabbage rolls, breads, and pies. You never left there hungry. Stella made pillows with the feathers from geese she raised. Stella enjoyed playing bingo and attended Wednesday night bingo in Glenella. She enjoyed travelling to Ontario and Grand Forks with Michael and John. She operated Stella’s Cafe in Glenella for about 10 years where she made friends and close connections with the local residents. She was always up to a visit and reconnected with many during the Glenella Homecoming in 1991.
Stella was predeceased by her parents Philip and Verna Slipetz, husband Fred in 1985, sons William in 1955, Michael in 2012, sisters Ann (Bill) Mandzuik, Jean Husak 2024, brother John (Rose) Slipetz, nephew Michael Zawada 2023, brother-in-law Nick Puhach 2002.
Left to mourn her passing is son John, one sister Olga Puhach, niece Susan Puhach, nephew Terry Husak, niece and nephews Phyllis Moen, Fr. Phillip Ackerman, Mike (Betty) Ackerman, and numerous cousins and extended family.
