Valdimar Jonasson Obituary

Valdimar Theodore (Valdie) Jonasson of McCreary, Manitoba, passed away on Tuesday, May 24th, 2022, at the age of 84.

Valdie was born on August 31st, 1937 to Jonas (Joe) and Annie Jonasson, the second of four children.

He attended Falmouth school completing his Grade 8 education while also working on the family farm. Over the next few years he found himself working in Winnipeg as well as Flin Flon. Just before working in Flin Flon, dad met the women he knew would one day be his wife. In 1962, Valdie married Diane Johanson and they made their home on the farm in Amaranth. Their family grew when they were blessed with four daughters. Valdie not only farmed with his brother, Jonas, they also had a successful construction business.

In the mid 1970s the family relocated to McCreary, Manitoba where Valdie continued to work with his brother in construction and other endeavours.

In 1987, Valdie became a long- haul transport driver. He took pride in his job and was the recipient for the safety award each and every year. He took meticulous care of his truck and was very proud of his accomplishments, as were his family.

Valdie had numerous hobbies and talents, including obtaining his personal private pilot license and flying his own plane; woodworking; car restoration; small mechanic repair; as well as fixing almost anything. Valdie, in his retirement, got back into the farm life by driving truck and hauling potatoes for his son-in-law John Adriaansen for several years.

Valdie had a strong sense of humour and loved a good joke - whether telling one or hearing one. He loved his family and was proud of all of their accomplishments and was always just a phone call away to offer advice or to come to our aid. He enjoyed helping neighbours and friends whenever possible and what he couldn’t fix he would make.

Valdie was predeceased by his parents, Joe and Annie Jonasson; step-father Bert Holman; brother Jonas Jonasson; father and mother-in-law Bjarni and Grace Johanson; sister-in-law Norma Jonasson; brother-in-law Kelvin Cooper.

Valdie is survived by his loving wife, Diane Jonasson; his four daughters, Cindy (Clinton) Zalizniak, Shelley (Emmet) Crough, Shawna (John) Adriaansen and Laura (Darren) Chapman; his 14 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; sister Gladys (Richard) Fast; brother, Harold Jonasson; sister-in-law, Merlaine Jonasson; sister-in-law, Marlene Cooper; brother-in-law, David Johanson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

As per Valdie’s wishes, a private family gathering will be held.
